<p>As parents and caregivers of autistic children, it's important to celebrate the milestones and recognize the progress that our children make. Every achievement, no matter how small, is a cause for celebration and a testament to their hard work and determination. I was so proud when my autistic son learned to tie his shoes, buckle his seat belt, and ride his bicycle.</p><p>Recognizing progress in autistic children is essential for boosting their self-esteem and fostering a positive attitude towards learning and development. By acknowledging their achievements, we can help them build confidence and motivation to continue growing and learning.&nbsp;</p><p>One way to celebrate milestones is by setting specific, achievable goals for your child. Whether it's improving social interactions, learning a new skill, or mastering a task, breaking down larger goals into smaller, achievable steps can help your child experience success along the way. For example, I did this when teaching Jaybear to tie his shoes. We worked on step one, making an X with the shoe laces, over and over. Using hand over hand, I practiced this simple step with him for a few days using a token system until he mastered it.&nbsp; Then we moved to the next step, making a loop. Over the past five years, the numbers of ABA providers have grown tremendously. We were able to find an ABA therapy in close proximity to our home. Also, there are ABA companies that provide in home services for families, which cuts down on the need to travel to an ABA center. </p><p>When considering ABA therapy for a loved one with autism, it is important to choose a reputable and experienced provider. Look for providers who have certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) on staff, as they have the expertise and training to develop and implement effective ABA programs.</p><p>Additionally, it is crucial to ensure that the ABA therapy provider uses evidence-based practices and follows ethical guidelines. Take the time to research and ask questions about the provider's approach, experience, and success stories.</p><p>Remember, ABA therapy is a collaborative process that involves the active participation of the individual with autism, their family, and the therapy team. By working together, ABA therapy can make a significant positive impact on the lives of individuals with autism.</p>

Whether it is due to a visible disability, a mental health condition, or any other aspect that sets us apart from the norm, facing judgment and scrutiny from others can be uncomfortable.</p><p>However, when dealing with stigma as a parent or an autistic individual, it is important to remember that we are not defined by the opinions of others. We have the power to rise above the stigma and embrace our uniqueness with confidence and self-love. In this blog post, we will explore some strategies to help you navigate through these difficult situations.</p><h2>Understanding the Stigma</h2><p>Stigma is often rooted in ignorance and fear of the unknown. People may stare or make assumptions based on limited knowledge or preconceived notions. It is crucial to recognize that their reactions are a reflection of their own biases, limited knowledge, and ignorance, rather than a true reflection of your worth.</p><h2>Responding with Grace</h2><p>When faced with stares or judgment, responding with grace can be a powerful way to diffuse tension and challenge stereotypes. Instead of reacting defensively, try responding with kindness and understanding. Remember that we all are subject to have biases and prejudge others. As a parent of a child on the spectrum, we are in a unique position to dispel misconceptions about autism and to promote understanding and awareness. Consider engaging in advocacy work, whether it be through public speaking, writing, or participating in support groups. Together, we can create a more inclusive and accepting society.</p><h2>Building Self-Esteem</h2><p>One of the most effective ways to combat stigma is to cultivate a strong sense of self-esteem. Surround yourself and your autistic loved ones with positive influences, whether it be supportive family and friends or groups like the Autism Dads Social Club and other similar organizations. Remember, you and your family members are so much more than the stares and judgments of others.
